Why We Advocate Repeal

What We Are

The Repeal 43 Committee is a national, voluntary committee of lawyers, pediatricians, social workers and educators formed in 1994 to advocate repeal of section 43 of the Criminal Code. Almost all of us are parents. We receive financial assistance from the Laidlaw Foundation and gratefully acknowledge its support.

What We Do

Our work began in April 1994 when we submitted a 30 page Brief to the Minister of Justice and other federal Ministers setting out our reasons for advocating repeal of section 43. Please contact us if you would like a copy of our Brief in English or French.

Since submitting our Brief, we have urged organizations to support repeal by writing federal ministers, prepared a petition, written newspapers, participated in radio and TV programs, responded to inquiries, supported MPs in introducing Bills to Parliament, and as far as possible, monitored judicial, political and international developments.
